Inside, the Ford Escape Hybrid has undergone some noticeable improvements. First off, the dash and instrument panel have a more refined appearance—especially at night when the ice-blue lighting comes to life. Secondly, the optional navigation is now DVD-based and features a larger touch screen than before. Also, to stay with green theme, the standard cloth upholstery is now made from a 100 percent recyclable material. And to make the cabin quieter, Ford designers have changed the roof panel and laminated the windshield to shield passengers from exterior noise.
Standard features include a power driver seat, cruise control, CD stereo with MP3 capability, and dual zone climate controls. But note that the air-conditioner only cools when the gas engine is in operation. A way to get around this is to switch to “Max AC”, which keeps the engine running even at a red light, but defeats the purpose and advantage of being a hybrid vehicle. Other hybrids use an A/C compressor to combat this issue, which Ford could have done.
The Escape Hybrid can be punched up to a more uplevel version with the help of a long roster of available amenities. It will feel more like a Honda, rather than a Ford, once loaded up with options. These include a premium stereo with in-dash CD changer, a navigation system, heated leather seats, and a moonroof, to name a few.
In terms of functionality, the front seats are comfortable for even large adults. And the rear seat has ample room for three, as well as a 60/40-split folding feature for added versatility. With the second row completely folded down, there’s a respectable 67 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Safety comes from standard front-seat side airbags and head curtain airbags with rollover sensing.
